It’s no accident, I think, that tennis uses the language of life. Advantage, service, fault, break, love, the basic elements of tennis are those of everyday existence, because every match is a life in miniature. Even the structure of tennis, the way the pieces fit inside one another like Russian nesting dolls, mimics the structure of our days. Points become games become sets become tournaments, and it’s all so tightly connected that any point can become the turning point. It reminds me of the way seconds become minutes become hours, and any hour can be our finest. Or darkest. It’s our choice.”

APC TENNIS CLUB

Founded in 1909, the Arlington Players Club (APC Tennis Club) is located in the charming residential neighborhood of Kearny, NJ, in Hudson County. Originally established as a theater club, it provided a space for local actors to come together and share their love for drama and theater. However, as time went on, some members discovered a stronger passion for tennis than for the performing arts, and the club transformed into a private tennis club.

Today, the Arlington Players Club remains one of the oldest active red clay tennis clubs in the United States. Not only does it serve as a private tennis club for its members, but it also operates as a social club for the local community. The club prides itself on its meticulously maintained seven red clay courts, offering a rare collection of European sport elegance perfectly suited for American-style competition.

Additionally, the Arlington Players Club is proud to sponsor a highly popular summer junior tennis program for youth in Hudson and Bergen counties. Welcoming participants aged four to twenty, the program provides a fantastic opportunity for young players to refine their skills and enjoy the sport in a supportive and enriching environment.

Furthermore, the club has become renowned for hosting the prestigious NJ State Red Clay Championship for both Men and Women for several decades. Athletes from all over New Jersey, and even as far as Florida, converge at the Arlington Players Club to compete for both fame and fortune. Spectators shower participants with praise, and the competition offers a small sum of prize money for the victors. NJ State Red Clay Court Championship is sanctioned by United States Tennis Association.

The Arlington Players Club stands as a testament to the enduring passion for tennis in the local area. With its rich history, top-notch facilities, and commitment to supporting the next generation of players, it continues to be a cherished institution within the community.
